I work at Ruger, shooting their autoloading handguns. Gloves get in the way so I decided to grow my own

I have used those fingerless padded gloves in the past. They work pretty well, but you are right about they get in the way.

If I did what you do for a living I would keep looking until I found a glove that works. Then buy a couple dozen! I have cut fingers off of gloves to make them work too.

What caliber caused that sort of damage? Or was it something else?

Um, first the 1911s, and a lot of LCPs too.
It doesn't hurt much... sprayed new skin on once... that burned
