As a Police Emergency Driving Instructor and Certified Accident Reconstructionist I have learned it takes your brain about 25 minutes to fuly engage in "driving mode". Backing is one of the more difficult and hazardous tasks one can perform in a motor vehicle. Always perform the difficult task at the END of the trip, when your brain is more able to do it efficiently.

+1. Although I did not know there was a specific reason.....When my wife wants to know why I back in to a spot at the store, I tell her it's way safer to back in to a spot when everybody sees you, and you see them. If you're trying to back out of a spot, your vision is limited a lot of the time, and other people don't necessarily see what you're doing. As far as the garage, this fits perfectly with robocop10mm's comment.
