Pima County GOP Glock Raffle Stirs Controversy
The Pima county GOP are raffling off a Glock of the same type shot Giffords as a fundraiser.
What do you think? Too soon? Poor taste??
A little snippet...

Raffles are a time-honored fundraising technique used by political parties and candidates who are constantly on the prowl for money. In gun-friendly Arizona, the prizes from time to time have included firearms.

But that was before the Jan. 8 massacre near Tucson that killed six people and wounded U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., and 12 others.
“I think it shows a rather stunning lack of judgment and sensitivity to raffle off the same make of weapon that was used in the tragic shooting spree of January the 8th,” Rogers said.

“And it’s kind of a slap in the face to a still-grieving community that is still working hard to absorb and get over the events of that tragic day. It’s horribly bad taste and incredibly poor judgment to do something like that.”

Jared Loughner is accused of using a 9mm Glock 19 handgun to shoot victims at Giffords’ constituent event outside a Safeway grocery store. In May, Loughner was deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial.

Mike Shaw, interim Pima County GOP chairman, said he was surprised by the heated reaction to the raffle, noting that Giffords herself owns a Glock handgun and has been an outspoken supporter of the Second Amendment. He said the party has raffled off guns in the past and stressed that the blame for the Jan. 8 carnage should go to “one crazy individual,” not the inanimate Glock handgun used to commit the crimes.

“That Glock is no more responsible for those deaths and the congresswoman’s injuries than a Number 2 pencil is responsible for cheating on a test,” Shaw said. “You look at the state of Arizona. But across the country, you have millions of people who own guns. They use them for recreation and self-protection. And Glocks are very popular guns.”

I'll tell you how stupid (distasteful) I think this raffle is.

It sounds like something the White House senior staff or....the DOJ would come up with!

This pistol had already been raffles off once before but the winner did not claim it so they are rattling it off again. That said, I think the timing could not have been more boneheaded or insensitive.

Taking the timing and location into account, it was not done in the best of taste. The gun had been raffled off previously but unclaimed, so they had certainly already gotten their money back on it plus's not as though they were an individual who desperately needed to be reimbursed. It wasn't just the congresswoman who was shot- people's family members, friends, and even children were injured or killed, so I expect that many people within that community are still dealing with a lot of grief.

Yeah and Oprah shouldn't have given away all those cars because it was offensive to anyone maimed in a car crash or to the families of those killed in auto related fatalities.

Cancel all lotteries because, gasp, people might invest their winnings in guns and ammunition.

And don't raffle off that motorcycle for the Children's Hospital as we know motorbikes are suicide machines ridden by organ donors.

It is a mechanical contraption, an inanimate object, a machine, a piece of art...people enjoy's lawful commerce. Get over it.
