I think this has something to do with it. I grew up in Northern Illinois. We don't have any poisonous snakes. At my last job I worked with a big, strong former Marine that was terrified of snakes. I asked him why. He grew up in Florida where there are poisonous snakes. He said they were all taught to be afraid of snakes when they were young because it was too hard for children to distinguish the 'good' from the 'bad' snakes. So they were taught to not like any of them. It makes sense to me.

Never had any pet snakes, mom was deathly afraid of them. Wife is the same way. If it has more than four legs, or less than 3, she doesn't want one in the house.

I grew up in the southwest and the southeast. Personally, I love snakes and spiders. Dad and I used to go out and live capture rattlers, copperheads, and water mocs for a guy who milked them for anti-venom. Now, if they were in our yard when we had a litter of pups we were trying to sell, or if we found one that was injured we would put it down. It was the right thing to do in those cases. Normally we just let them be.

I do have a few friends that own snakes. I handle them when it is just me visiting. If the wife is along, I leave them in their enclosures out of respect for her. i still want one, but I know it ain't happening.

Now , I dont have spiders as pets either but we used to catch tarantulas and keep them a few days when I was a kid, again I lived in AZ and those things would come out of the wood dork at night to feed . Spiders don't bother me

Selective breeding has come up with some incredible colors in tarantulas.

My son and I each kept a few tarantula. I would only keep the calmer species. I had a B. smithii, Grammostola rosea and an avicularia versicolor. Beautiful, interesting and very graceful pets. Very low maintenance, too. I rarely, if ever, handled them and they are easier to care for than a snake.
