That locked gate could have been an obstacle for the person running from your home. It would slow him down at least.
He could trip over it and fall on his head.

i would tie a damn trip flare to that gate that would scare the bejeezus outta someone. Personally I like the WiFi cameras they are cheap, can be mounted anywhere you can get a wifi signal to and you can monitor it at work.

A $40 net cam works just as well! I had a situation like this in early 1988. just off a crappy Marriage and losing My Dad,..I moved into a basement apt. in a private house belonging to a ret. Fireman. What an azz he was. He came into my apt. to "use the bathroom" he claimed, when I caught him. I had to play "possum" one day, and called the police. My best answer was to move out, but he had a huge fine to pay to avoid jail, and he was lucky I knew it was him using his "key" and he didn't get shot for tresspassing.

Hadn't read that particular post prior to my post, but I think there's a bit of a stretch between a 12v shock and a 12ga shotgun.

Definitely. My electric fence packs way more pop than a car battery on a doorknob. Been keeping nosy kids and dogs out of my yard for years with no issues.

Delta's dummy cam idea is a good one, I use them myself. The ones I use have a battery for a blinking red light to give the appearance of functionality and they're cheap enough. Maybe you can find a place where they would be tough to get to in case the would be miscreant tries to 'disable' them, but are in a very visible location upon approach of your home. This way, they may figure they've already been seen and would abandon their endeavor...of course most of the criminal types aren't known for their intelligence... An easy install/remove and I doubt the landlord is going to notice a couple of screw holes in the siding when you do move...

Here's another idea for you...the door jamb reinforcement...

http://armorconcepts.com/

This one is a bit pricy, just posted the link for a visual. I have something similar but I made it myself from scraps I had laying around...

Of course nothing is going to stop someone who is hell bent on gaining access to your home, but the least you can do is make it difficult for them...
