Default Paranoia...?

I subscribe to several gun and political discussion forums. For each, I use the same screen name, or a minor variation and the same password. It helps this old guy keep things simple.

On a "wild hair" I did a Google search of my screen name. I got a whole bunch of hits, showing every forum I subscribe to and some I used to subscribe to. Some opened up user control panels, showing some personal information that I would normally be uncomfortable having "out there." I have a general distrust of the Internet because of the ability for it to be penetrated by unwanted eyes. For that reason, I am careful to not list any personal information than is necessary to register for a forum.

I'm not sure what I can do about it, but just wanted to toss the info out for what it's worth. Call me paranoid if you wish, but I would not be surprised to learn that certain federal agencies or anti-gun groups are lurking among us.

For any moderators who may see this, is there anything we can do to tighten up our security?

I think if the powers that be want to they can follow your server to your personal account and have all the info they need about you.
Me, I'm not going to post anything on the internet thinking I'm truly anonymous.

Welcome to the internet sir, everything you say and post can be held against you in a court of law. Please be reminded if you do not want something to come back and bite you in the ass later be very careful what personal information you post and comments or opinions you post on any public internet forums. They will be in internet airspace forever for all to see. As long as there are search engines, you can be found. If you feel you have posted something you are not sure about being seen for security and personal reasons, the Mods may be able to delete that thread or comment for you if you request it.

The only thing you can do is not post anything personal or damning on the internet.

Choose a more generic name for use on the internet, vary your name between forums. Only access forums from public computers or at a minimum if you have a laptop from public hot spots. Google knows more about any of us than the federal government does.

Not only does Google know more about us than the government, that information can be had for the low, low price of $19.99.... LOL

In all seriousness, just a few precautions can help greatly. Keep your Antivirus updated, use a firewall, use adaware/spybot or something similar regularly. Make sure that any site you use for a "secure" transaction is using HTTPS and not HTTP (you'd be surprised how many sites don't do this). Also, don't post info if you're not willing to have your parents, your employer, your priest/pastor, and wife find it and read it. It's not just urban legend of people being fired for posting on FaceBook.. LOL

If you post on lots of forums and you input personal information into them the only think you can do is go back and edit that info if you remember all your different account names and passwords. That internet is a double edged sword in terms of security. Kinda sad, but that's how it is.

Being somewhat ignorant of computer & internet stuff, I kinda take it for granted that anything I post on the internet will be seen by anybody anyway. I'm not into anything illegal and my views are no secret so I just don't worry about it. I seriously doubt somebody's going to pound my door down due to my opinions or advise, but if they do, they'll win the Darwin award. I'd like to think I don't look much like a victim but am ready for most circumstances that may arise. I'm not very difficult to find in the 1st place.
