Default 'Out of the Furnace' ballistics? -SPOILERS-

I know it's from Hollywood, but still.

Using a deer rifle and rounds, Russell Baze shoots Harlan DeGroat in the R exterior thigh at few feet. Harlan crawls, stands up and walks away. Then Russell shots him in the mid R 'quadrant' at a few more feet. Harlan walks. Finally he shoots him in the back at two or three dozen yards.

Is it possible to stand and walk after being shot in the leg, and then the body, with a hunting round, presuming the major vascular & skeletal systems aren't hit? Don't hunting rounds mushroom?

With a modern properly expanding hunting tip bullet likely not... However if the bullet "pencils" through, the body can still motivate for a short period. Shock onset will be the killer...

A 140 lb deer covered about 25 yards in a second or two after having both lungs and the heart hit. It didn't go any further and required no second shots. But oxygen starvation of the brain and muscles takes a little bit.

But lots of what you describe is definitely for dramatic effect.

Reality? A rifle round at close distance causes

"hydrostatic shock"; tissue literally turns to liquid.

Anybody who's ever hurt themselves seriously, or had a

leg injury, knows that in the short term, you don't walk

away from a serious leg injury.

And by "serious", I mean a blow with a hammer, a nail

puncture, a drill slipping and drilling into your leg, not

even to consider the massive tissue damage a rifle

would do to a leg at close range.

Almost anyone would concede after the first shot. Even the manliest macho hombre would not endure three rifle slugs and keep fighting.
I, on the other hand....
