Default Okay, The Cartridge Collection

Use your imagination, visualize, and try to answer three questions.

I want to make a shadowbox-type thingy, and have one of every available cartridge in it.

I'm willing to forgo the exotic, $10 apiece safari rounds, but everything else is a go.

So here we go....

1) Just how many cartridges, still in production, for rifle, pistol, and shotgun is that?

2) How big would such a display be?

3) what would such an endeavor cost?

I have 3 cartridge boards in my man cave. Each board is hung from 100 lb hooks placed IN A STUD. HEAVY wire on board. And that is not everything out there- just a good sampling of rifle, handgun, and shotgun ammo.

A friend is a SERIOUS collector. He has 4 map cabinets. The kind with the pull out drawers that hold flat map sheets?

It will be a lot more ammo than you hink (I started mine with the shadow box idea in the 70's) It will cost more than you think, since it is hard to get single rounds of many cartridges.

But do not let me put you off- it can be a lot of fun- and along the way, you learn about why THIS is different from THAT.

Man, BB, I want one of those so bad. There is one in the office of the gun club I belong to and it is awesome. That one sells for about $189 and I would say it measures probably 18"x 24". I'll try to get a pic of it for you some day.

A noble endeavor!

Do you want current production or current and obsoleate production?

Some of your smaller rounds are going to be more expensive that big 600 NE.

Are you going rimfire as well as centerfire?

I bet he wants (1) .22 short, (1) .22 long, (1) .22LR and on up. Not different brands and cases for the same caliber. Maybe I'm wrong.

No, that's exactly what I'm visualizing. Basically, Okay, here's the smallest round made. Here's the next one up. Here's the next one, and it's a hollowpoint, here's the next, but it's an example of a Semi wadcutter.

If I can do a nice display, I'm not above buying a box for a caliber I don't have, taking one out, and doing a giveaway for members that can use them. Except for Brian, he goes nuts if they short him in the value pack.

For now, I'm not even going to try to find the obsolete stuff, I just want to round up available stuff. If the collecting bug starts to bite me, I might start questing for the 9x27 mm Aztec round.

So how many calibers am I looking at?

Just a thought, but why not solicit the good members to send you one cartridge from the ones they use often. That would be a great start and would give you some sections that you can then fill in over time.

I had considered that, but shipping ammo is such a PIA.

What I need is the list. I had never heard of the 6.8, and now it's popping up everywhere. I'm curious as to just how much is out there that I've never heard of.

Hundreds, heck, maybe thousands. I don't know. I have about eighty on my wall and it's the tip of the iceberg...

Okay, so this has been done before.

But that's good. It's competition, something to aspire to.....
