I like 5th gear on my lil car, but i can't start off in it. Maybe this could be incorporated as a booster engine for long range flights. IIRC, one of the problems with the commercial viability of the concorde was its thirst for fuel; maybe these will be more efficient for the cruising part of the flight.

Now, if something is going to be doing Mach 6 or whatever, i would bet on it being a drone that is probably only a half step away from a cruise missile..........unless maybe they could teach bears to kamikaze them. That would be a win-win.

A scram jet sure would make one hell of a UAV Bomb. Think about it Launch an F-18 with one from say the East coast of the USA fly up over the Atlantic go super sonic and drop it. Send it on its way to Afghanistan and politely park it right in the middle of a town.

can't we already launch UAV bombings from Pakistan? at a fraction of the cost?

sure great, it's wonderful science ... it's also dated tech that has almost no useful application Just because we can be testing scram jet technology, doesn't mean we should be

Meh.

My moneys on my son and his accelerating particles.
Forget about, “When it positively, absolutely has to be there overnight.”
He’s working on, “When it positively, absolutely has to be there two days before you even send it.”

What are the scramifications if it hits a bird at mach 6? Turbulence? Neat technology and no doubt they'll perfect it someday...unless quantum teleportation gets done first.

It broke up into pieces and crashed into the Pacific today just less then 60 seconds into it's planned 300 second flight.

Better luck next time.

30+yrs of research, how many millions of $$ invested, for a tech that is incapable of operating on it's own, in a limited workable environment?

yeah ..... well spent time and money
