New Hobo Jungles
We're in hard times, no doubt.
Conversing with a friend tonight who lives in the country, yet is still near a major interstate.
It seems there are some homeless folks living in the nearby woods.
She noticed that on some days there were fewer eggs in the coop. Then she figured out that the wood folk were " liberating" a few eggs.
They never make all of the eggs and they never damage anything.
So she started leaving a few small extras out in the yard for them.
It seems to be working very well. Her property is respected and clean, and some needy folks who are not on the dole get just a little something to help them survive.
Basically we're in about the same situation as our parents/grandparents were in the depression.
Now, I'm about the most conservative guy you'd ever meet, but I think we're in hard times and small things like this can make a bit of difference to a person.
Just saying, there are people out there who won't take the government's b.s. just to eat, and maybe a little help here and there will go a long way.
Any doubts, just ask your grandparents or greatgrandparents about the way it was, and "hobo jungles".

Take care. Being a good Samaritan requires some caution. Purposely encouraging theft under the cover of darkness is asking for trouble. Not everyone who lurks in the shadows around your house maybe innocent egg thieves?
Remember the stories of "Robin Hood" and his Merry band were fiction. The stories of Charley Manson and his family were real.

I would feed a begger before a thief anyday. You steal from me and bad things will happen. If you ask kindly and are really in need I will give as much as I can. A thief is one of the lowest forms of life.

I am on the fence with this one. At one hand, I hate a thief. On the other hand, I can't stand when people sit there and ask for help, but aren't doing anything but asking for, and depending on charity from others.

At least the egg thief is out there trying to be self sufficient, and not asking for hand outs while doing nothing to better their own situation. Not that I am excusing the egg thief.

Now I am different kind of person. I don't expect or want charity from others. I couldn't live with myself and hold my head high unless I knew I paid back any of my debts, or earned what I was given. Perhaps these woods people wood like to show thanks by helping out with the chores outside?

There's nothing not conservative about a citizen giving a helping hand if they choose to. In fact it's more conservative to put things like this in the hands of the people and not the government.

That being said I'd think it be wise to be very careful just how one handles acts of charity. Some might mistake your kindness for stupidity. Many times good deeds are the ones punished most often. I do hope that nothing negative happens if there is nothing one morning or just seen as not enough.
But, people should help each other. It's just a good way to think and I believe helps make us better as a people. the givers just need to be careful in these modern times.

Everything is all fine and well, then one day the panhandler snaps at being told no! and then said panhandler douses' the citizen with some accelerant and sets him on fire.

Maybe they'll want a chicken to eat now and then, too.

Wow. This is a tough one. Looking at this particular situation it seems to be working. Her yard is clean and nothing is damaged. Yes, she's short a few eggs taken by someone that had no right to them. That would make them a thief. Keep in mind that I hate a thief with a passion, but would I steal food to live? Yup! I can only hope that I would do it in a non-confrontational way, much like the egg thieves. Instead of breaking into her house to steal steak, they are making do with what they need, and not making the owner do without. Maybe there is honor among at least a few thieves.

My Grandfolks lost the equivalent of millions in the depression. They became poor almost overnight but still were doing better than many people. They may have lost their wealth but they didnt lose their heart and soul. The back of their property bordered on train tracks in Rochester NY so Hobo's were a common daily sight. My grandma always set a couple extra plates of dinner on the back porch for them and never had any problems with them.

That was then, this is now; times have changed and not for the better. Today, those same Hobos would be picketing those doing better than them not just accepting help as it was offered. I probably would not be as generous as my Grandfolks were but they werent forced to give away their income pre-tax to others less fortunate they never saw or met like we have 85 years later.

There is no more pretax disposable income today than the last depression and because weve been required to submit a penance to the government out of every paycheck since the day I earned one; Ive assumed that the gov is now responsible for their well being cause its not a choice for me who I assist, its just another tax!

Groups of like minded folks like churches, Odd Fellows, Masons and others were once the guardian angels for our very generous society. They have been kicked to the curb by our own Government because Republicats of days gone by realized they could buy votes with our money instead of their own if they took over the benevolence train! Its now a gravy train and those that once cared selflessly for the local poor no longer have the resources or support to help them anymore.

The whole Social Services gig is a house of cards thats being held up by a foundation of jealousy over earned disparity. You didnt build that business is the mantra of a hypocritical socialist pig that lives like a King and has decided the acceptable level of existence for others should be equal paupership for all but him and his Cronies!

The man in the big house on the hill has changed alright, he's so damn benevolent with our income yet he lives high on the hog at the same time the rest of us are being accused of not doing our part. I cant believe he eats with the same mouth all tat BS comes out of! I know of two people that have taken vacations in Hawaii in the last year of our country in financial ruin- BHO (POTUS) and my sister (lifetime disability from doing yard work), both of which havent earned a living from a private employer in their lifetimes and neither has felt any pain, only collected more of what we earn less of daily.

Luckily, I dont have to worry about Hobo's, homeless and jobless people taking my property cause they dont live in in the woods in upstate NY, we have public housing for them and food stamps provide allot more beer and chips than a few eggs or a whole chicken could ever think of getting them!

That said, any person fallen on hard times that doesnt collect social buckies deserves our respect and help, I just dont know how we will find them, its like finding a needle in a haystack...

My mom and her immediate family lived through the depression and didn't lose a thing. They had nothing but their farm to start with, but it was the best place to be when the SHTF. They ate better than most, and so did anyone willing to put in a days work on their farm. Hobos, WWI vets, and even formerly affluent neighbors from town were helped by the farmers surrounding them. Funny how the favors were never returned once things were on more of an even keel. At least they got some work out of them before they fed them.

Mom loves to tell a story about two hygienically challenged travelers and a former banker sitting on the summer porch sharing a baked chicken. The travelers were making fun of the banker because he had to kill the chicken and had blood all over what were good clothes before the crash. Apparently they weren't sure they wanted to share a table with someone that dirty.
