I imagine having the sponges removed is not fun but it beats bleeding out.

I don’t know how these sponges react to hydration.

I used to remove wound packing by re-wetting the gauze with sterile saline. It wasn’t that bad. The patient was also pre-medicated. I would hope the sponges wouldn’t need to be removed until the victim was in a controlled medical environment where the above was possible.
