I learned pursuit driving in a Ceown Vic, fully loaded with the million pounds of additional crap. I mean, neccessary equipment, so I love rear wheel drive and V8's.

The last pursuit I was in was in a V6, FWD Impala. Felt more like I was 17 again raising hell in my mother's Accord than in a 10-80 driving a police car.

My thought has always been the police should be in better shape than the bad guy, have better guns, be smarter, have faster cars, better technology and have more friends present when things go south. Unfortunately budget constraints effectively disallow 3/4 of those advantages.

A V6, turboed or not, will never perform like a V8. They can make equal or better power out of a V6 but not without sacrificing some things. I personally think a V8 rear wheel drive car is the only thing cops should drive. Fuel economy is almost a non issue as V8 cars are easily capable of near 30mpg.

How about the new Carbon Motors E7, powered by a 250+ hp BMW twin turbo 3.0 liter?

The county mounties here keep buying 4-door ford trucks and GMC trailblazers. These aren't setup for off-road pursuit or anything; i don't get it. Maybe they each want a K9 with them?

I don't know how much the weight difference would be now. There is a crazy cajun who will shoehorn the Altima 3.5V6 into a Sentra, 4-banger, for a large increase in HP. Without adding the turbo, it only adds about 50 pounds. I have considered it, but wouldn't do it without AWD, no point.

That is fine in NC, but in many parts of the country RWD v8's only perform well 6 months of the year. Long open desert roads of Oklahoma cannot be compared to twisty rural dirt roads of the northeast. Each department has different needs depending on its location and size.

That's the one I mentioned. They had a write-up in Diesel Power recently.
