Well...if you're going to go by "according to the NHRA" then there is really only one muscle car.

HEMI.

Don't matter if the stickers on the side of the car say Ford, Chevy, Pontiac, Dodge, or Toyota... ALL the NHRA "big dog" teams are running a MOPAR Hemi

well sorta... they were originally built from the Hemi, now they are just based off the Hemi. the blocks are now just huge milled solid engines made from billet aluminum. nothing actually Mopar anymore, just the design.

There were lots of "muscle" cars. They just didn't slap silly stickers on them until about '69.
Well that'd been 1970 and "OPEC" along with the (OIL-EMBARGO) and insurance Companies , killed the TRUE MUSCLE CAR , not yur grannies wheels......!

And one of my favorites,-the Dodge Coronet 440.
With stock paint, it looked like granny's car. No trim or decals.

there are a lot of different definitions of a muscle car and every generation it could be different from the last. take the Corvette or even the Shelby AC Cobra, some purists would argue those are not really muscle cars but sports cars. what about the little Ford Falcon? here's a bit of trivia for you, it's basic platform was used for the first Mustangs.

then there were those thinly disguised as street cars that were nothing more than street legal race cars! some were even sneaky about what they were, sleepers as they were called. no decals, spoilers, or even flashy paint jobs, and some even had hubcaps to even fool people into thinking they were slow. but underneath the hood, they were beasts and made to go from point A to point B, as quickly as possible.

everybodies ideas of what a muscle car is will be different. alot depends on what you grew up around.
