That's what I thought too. Had a long time to rethink my decision while in sunny South Vietnam. Don't mean to pile on 99, but you keep coming back to your original position, "I'm gonna wait and go active." Sounds like you want affirmation, not suggestions or options.

If you want to serve and the only opportunity is to go reserve, take it. I've been both AD and reserve. Reserves now have greatly increased responsibilities from when I was in and you'll have time-in when AD slots start opening up. Besides while in the reserves you can take additional training, military courses/schools that make you more promotable when the time comes.

Regarding cutbacks, even solid, skilled combat veteran career NCOs and officers are worried they'll be cut.

A USMC buddy of mine told me the USMC will sometimes accept certain things as long as the guy shows up in great shape already.

Not true, with all due respect. You can be built like a brick and not make it through the first phase. It aint muscle, its mental toughness, determination, guts. I've seen big strong athletic dudes fade and get set back in week two...and little wirey guys break battalion push-up records, shoot high expert and graduate with a free set of dress blues.

There no such thing as GED slot. And he just wants you to join reserves because there's reserve openings, and it will make his job easier. Try a different recruiter. I went to 2 recruiters before joining

I'm in the Navy reserves and it's a bitch to try to go active. I've been trying since I got back from A-school. My advice is keep bugging the recruiter until he gets you a open active slot. Reserves isn't to bad but you don't get all the benefits.

No ****!!!!

My progression was

Deck Seaman
Struck out of Deck
Fireman with R-Division
HTFN
HT3 (SW)
DC2 (SW)
EAOS

HT is a sea going rate should not too difficult to get active. I was in in the late 80's when brought back the DC rate. I was open, I made first increment on both 3 Class and 2 class.

I made HT3 first time. I take my second class exam in August. The navy's tough right now. There trying to find reasons to kick people out. In the reserves I go and work at the shipyards in the sheet metal shop. It's not to bad I do 3 weeks at a time.
