Lesson here, don't take a firearm to Mexico.
If being a veteran excuses you from crimes, foreign or domestic, then is it ok for me to rob a liquor store?

Not necessarily because he just a veteran (which we should look out for the same way they did for all of us) but the fact that U.S. border officials told him if he filled out their paper he would be fine and since they were wrong they need to fix it.

You can't cross international borders, violate their laws, and expect to be forgiven because you used to be a Marine.
But they (illegals) can sure come here and be entitled to gov. benifits and protection.

He didn't break the law. He got caught trying to obey the law. He checked his shotgun at us customs, got cleared to go to Mexico, then got 'busted' trying to clear his weapon at Mexico customs.
I wish I were dictator for a year. I'd have this Mexico problem licked.

No, Mexicans cops do not make up the laws on the spot. Its a well publicized fact that its illegal to take guns into Mexico. Every year Americans are arrested for taking guns and ammunition into Mexico. Soon the former Marine will be traded for some Mexican who was sentenced in the US for a crime committed here. The Mexican sentenced in the US will serve his time in a Mexican jail and the Marine will serve his sentence in a US jail.
US border folks dropped the ball when they told the guy the gun would be legal in Mexico. One cannot legally take a gun into Mexico without first receiving permission from the Mexican government. i know folks who hunt in Mexico; they get permission to take their guns there and have no problems.
Its sad the young man is mistreated in a squalid Mexican prison.

He had registered the shotgun with U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials on the U.S. side of the border, declaring he planned to take it with him into Mexico.
Despite being told that the shotgun, a Sear & Roebuck model that once belonged to his great-grandfather, posed no problem Hammar was arrested as soon as he crossed into Mexico. The arrest came when he tried to register the gun with Mexican customs officials, his parents and their Mexican attorney told Reuters.

I guess I'll draw a lot of fire for this, but I'll be damned if I can gin up any sympathy for anyone who chooses to spend their American dollars in that cesspool in the first place.
It's not as if this is something new. It happens every day.

I always hated trips to mexico. The place is run by a bunch of idiots, and it shows everywhere you go. It is like they never have the attitude " I will make my life better today, and tomorrow I will do it again". They just throw their trash out the car window, end of story.

Not true. Guns ARE allowed to be taken into Mexico. And many Americans do so every year to hunt. This marines gun ended up being 2 inches shorter than what the Mexican law allows.
The fact remains that he was busted while checking his gun in at customs. He got screwed for doing the RIGHT thing. Mexican customs should have taken his gun at the most.

Oh and btw, from someone who has been to Mexico numerous times. YES, Mexican cops make up the law on the spot all the time. If you drive the coast, you better have bribe items (not cash), American beer, cigarettes and porn works best.
