Default Man shoots himself with an unloaded gun

Cop shoots himself in leg unloading gun :: Porter County :: Post-Tribune

November 5, 2010

VALPARAISO -- A recently sworn-in Hebron reserve police officer shot himself in the leg Wednesday while unloading his gun before going inside a school to pick up his 5-year-old son.

Daniel Glickauf, 29, of South Haven, was sworn in as a reserve officer on Monday. On Saturday, he completed the required 40-hour prebasic training with the Hebron Police Department, Chief Steve Sibbrell said.

That training, conducted in-house, includes firearms training, Sibbrell said, although reserve officers continue to get further training once they are working with the force.

"It's just an unfortunate accident," Sibbrell said, noting Glickauf had surgery on his leg on Wednesday and probably was still in the hospital.

Glickauf, who shattered his femur into eight pieces when the gun fired, will not physically be able to work with the police force for some time. And after he's healed, "He's going to have to go through a department review," Sibbrell said.

Porter hospital in Valparaiso, where Glickauf was taken following the shooting, did not release his condition or confirm if he is a patient there.

According to the police report, Glickauf went to First Presbyterian Church of Valparaiso, 3401 Valparaiso St., to pick up his 5-year-old son from school. He was in his vehicle in the parking lot just before 2:30 p.m. when he decided not to alarm any other parents by walking in with his firearm on his hip. He also did not want to leave a loaded gun unattended in the vehicle.

He ejected the magazine from the gun, ejected the round from the chamber, and reinserted the ejected round back into the magazine, he told police. He then attempted to put the magazine back in the gun but it didn't fit right. Not being familiar with the Smith & Wesson Springfield .40-caliber handgun, although he said it was his personal gun that he also uses for work, "he thought if he pulled the trigger the magazine would seat properly," Glickauf told police.

Instead, the gun fired and the bullet went into his upper left thigh.

Ya'll be careful out there with your smith and wesson springfields......................and your pump action revolvers, etc...

I looked at one of those, but it was a Smith and Wesson Colt!

Beside the obvious misprint all I have to say is ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch.

A femur fractured in 8 places is a pretty serious injury. Of course in the chest, head or abdomen would have been much worse.

Forget about the caliber misprint...who the hell told this guy that pulling the trigger would seat the magazine? He should be removed from the force immediately...

it just amazes me how some people can be determined safe to carry a gun as part of their job.

ok so he ejects the round puts the bullet back in the mag then reloads the weapon... i fail to see how that is unloading a handgun unless he usually keeps the bullets in his femur.

I think we are missing one little detail in the story about him dropping the slide after reinserting the magazine?

-Drop mag
-Rack slide to eject cartridge
-Lock slide back
-Load magazine
-Release slide
-Pull trigger

Isn't that the unloading process y'all practice? Oh, no, that's to reload and fire. Oops, my bad.

Was the guy in a fog or really had no idea what was going on that day? Pulling the trigger does NOT load a cartridge. What do you think happened to his Springfield Armory .40 Smith & Wesson?
