The Lord of the Rings is not man-made disaster, however I often cite the philosophy of collectivism and mankind's tendency to gather power in centralized govt to be a modern day "ring of power"...the power gathered as such corrupts all who touch it.

Tolkien's books, like many good sci fi books have much symbolism and are nothing but a future projection of current affairs and technology.

One Ring to Rule Them All, One Ring to Find Them, One Ring to Bring Them All, and in the Darkness Bind Them.

Trying to think of things. What about:

Tron - man made computer game sucks people that are good at it inside and makes them compete, turns them to slaves, and might kill them in the process

Maximum Overdrive - all machines go nuts and try to kill humans

Cyborg - Jean Claude Van Damme hunts some cyborg killing machine in an urban dump in the future

Galaxy Quest - Funny movie I love where man's TV shows have been beaming into space forever and another world uses a cheesy show to model their world after and another alien race comes to battle them and tries to destroy the our world

A.P.E.X. - a robot is sent in a time travel experiment from like 2073 to 1973 and things go terribly wrong

Eyeborgs - government spying drongs designed to keep people safe end up killing people too

Hellraiser - scientist creates a puzzle box that can open the gates of hell. People die.

Prometheus - people in general (there and on Earth) are nearly wiped out after man made android starts taking matters into his own hands

I don't think 'Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.' is anywhere as big a problem as people without integrity being drawn to power in the first place. I believe people who seek positions of power are probably corrupted before they even get it.

There's a difference between people using what man has created for their own evil ends, and what man has created inadvertently resulting in poor outcomes.
