The Lord of the Rings is not man-made disaster, however I often cite the philosophy of collectivism and mankind's tendency to gather power in centralized govt to be a modern day "ring of power"...the power gathered as such corrupts all who touch it.
Tolkien's books, like many good sci fi books have much symbolism and are nothing but a future projection of current affairs and technology.
