Lost my grandfather today.
At the age of 83, my grandfather entered the clearing at the end of the path around 0200 yesterday. He was born in Jamestown NY on 27 April, 1929, and passed away at home, with his family present.
NYSP Trooper (Ret.) Richard C. Ward, was a father of 5 children, had 8 grandchildren, and with his wife, Marlene J. Ward, was a foster parent to over 200 kids in a span of 40 years. After retiring from the State Police, he was a machuinist at Newbrook\Exelco in Silver Creek NY for 17 years. He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and time with his friends and family.
In 1986, he started to have balance problems, and it was determined that he had a degenerative disorder in the balance center of his brain. Never one to give up, he kept himself active untill early this year. Unfortunately, he soon developed other health issues around that time. Through this, he never gave up. He just kept on fighting, and pushed himself to keep going. On Christmas Eve, he took a turn for the worse. In the early hours of December 24th, he had a stroke. He never fully came back from it. We were keeping a 24 hour watch on him for the next 6 days. In the end, he was comfortable, at home with his family. We will all miss him.
R.I.P. Trooper R.C. "Papa Bear" Ward. You are home now.
