First of all, REALLY?

Secondly, lasers are photons. Photons are light. Light continues to travel until it is absorbed by another type of matter. If the laser misses the target, that shot of light continues through the atmosphere and into space then on to???

If the laser misses a target, and makes it out of the atmosphere, it will continue to travel until it hits something, which may be never.

I wonder how long it will be before they shrink this technology down so that it will fit in a rifle.

I wonder how long after that we will destroy all the satellites with our laser guns.

That's a possibility, but remember, satellites are extremely far away, and moving very fast. If they somehow were hit by a laser from a rifle, it would only be for a microsecond. Would that be enough to really damage it? Plus, if they have a reflective skin, a laser will just deflect off of them.

Deflection, reflection, refraction..... They all have the ability to return to Earth.

How long before someone develops a laser riding anti laser missile like they did with the Shrike and HARM anti radar missiles?

Sure as I know anything, I know this—they will try again. Maybe on another world, maybe on this very ground swept clean. A year from now, ten? They'll swing back to the belief that they can make people...better. And I do not hold to that. So no more runnin'. I aim to misbehave.” Mal Reynolds Serenity/Firefly

I'm going to guess quite a while unless they have a major breakthrough in energy storage devices and power delivery systems. I would guess the next step would be development of a system that will fit on an M1A1 or other MBT chassis
