Just a thought

I was reading the Cowboy Chronicles for October (Single Action Shooting Society news letter) and was impressed by a short article written by a SASS member on the Cowboy Code. It seems we, as a society, have lost our way from the cowboy code as was taught by our heroes of the silver screen and early TV. Roy Rodgers, Hopalong, and Gene Autry are a few of those heroes who taught us right from wrong, good from bad and how honor, manners and dignity were personal traits to be embraced in our daily lives. I wish I knew where all the cowboys have gone and hope they come back real soon because we really need them today.

Here is an excerpt from the article on Gene Autry’s take on the cowboy code. I have printed it out and hope to keep honor to it for the rest of my days as it has reminded me of who I am and what I must strive to be.

Gene Autry:

The cowboy code –

A cowboy never takes unfair advantage
– even of an enemy.

A cowboy never betrays a trust.
He never goes back on his
word.

A cowboy always tells the truth.

A cowboy is kind and gentle to
small children, old folks, and
animals.

A cowboy is free from racial
and religious intolerances.

A cowboy is always helpful
when someone is in trouble.

A cowboy is always a good
worker.

A cowboy respects womanhood,
his parents, and his nation’s
laws.

A cowboy is clean about his person
in thought, word, and
deed.

A cowboy is a Patriot.

Agreed. We, as a society are screwed...

It's not the Cowboys have all gone and left us, it's that the people that subscribe to their beliefs have become smaller and they have drifted further from our Dog eat Dog society.

It would be nice if we could get some of those traits back in "positive" character category though. :o

You're right Scubie. The Code has been shredded by a "me first" entitlement attitude.

Being old enough to remember Roy and Dale, Cisco, Paladin, and others...

Reading the code and looking at myself, I wondered how much of that am I lacking.

Not much.

It could also be argued that our end was begun by warmongering politicians with nothing on their minds but extending their own power at the cost of the weak. Of course, we could also blame the Catholics; things seemed to really accelerate toward the sewer when the U.S. got stuck with a fight in Vietnam. http://www.time.com/time/printout/0,8816,874816,00.html

My heroes have always been cowboys.... I seriously need a single action.

Sounds like Gene Autry was fond of Samurais. He lived by the Bushido Code.
Justice, Courage, Benevolence, Respect, Honesty, Honor and Loyalty.
