Just Gotta Brag

Just gotta brag a little bit. This was the email I sent to my partners earlier this evening...

Amplify'd went pretty well today. There were 20 companies presenting today to a group of VC's and other industry finance people. Each company had 5 minutes to make their pitch then 2 to 3 minutes for questions from a panel of 5 judges. I was 3rd to the last to go in the afternoon's session so I had plenty of time to gauge what the questions were going to be.

The process was not conducive to going through the presentation as constructed, so I handed out the presentation documents as supplementary material at the end of the pitch. Only having 5 minutes for a 10 minute presentation wasn't going to work either. I canned the presentation that I had and told the "story" of the company. I opened with the student loan problems in this country, then told the story of the family who described my work as a miracle as the genesis of the dream to construct a site like eduLaunchpad. I followed with the site's current status and our ask for $1,000,000. I however lost track of my revised outline in my head and finished with one minute to spare.

They apparently liked what they heard. We won 2nd prize for the event. There's a design package we were awarded. But the feedback sheets all had one complaint... I was short on financial information. Guess what the part was that I skipped leaving that extra minute... yep... the financial information. We probably could have won first. Oh well, not that it really matters. What's important is we are big on the radar of the VC community once again in Chicago.

I'm going to take the original presentation and record it and put it up on YouTube so we can use it as a tool.

One thing that this event today showed me is the importance of getting back to telling the story of the company. That's what really caught people's attention.

I'll construct a followup message tomorrow to the judges and the folks at Next Door thanking them. Tomorrow is also my conversation with Eric who heads up new ventures at Simple Tuition. That should be interesting.

Congrats Scott. Presentations are difficult even if everything is going according to plan.

For those not familiar with jargon, "VC" is venture capitalist. We're in the process of starting to pitch for more money. The system is 95% complete and ready for marketing campaign. Unfortunately, our seed money is pretty well exhausted. Ah the joys of being an entrepreneur.

very nice! looks like something interesting and could help a lot of students get into college and help parents come up with ways to pay for a quality college. again congrats on your presentation and wish you much luck with securing the capital money needed to continue.
