Okay you Jeep know it alls, I have a question (most likely like 10 actually but will start with one) for y'all. Some of you may or may not know, but I am stuck in the middle of the desert for the next year+ on military duty and am in need of a vehicle. Now my unit won't let me bring my motorcycle here or I'd just use that. I've always had a soft spot for Jeeps, and ever since my sister got one when she turned 16, it's only gotten worse. I've fallen in love with the unlimited wranglers since I can carry a lot more people and still have space for bags to go camping, hunting, etc. My question is, at what mileage do they start to go to crap at? The bank is allowing me 20k on a loan and I have found a few for that and under. The two I am most seriously considering are both 2011, one is a manual with 80k miles and the other is an automatic with 102k. I'd prefer the auto as me and manuals are not the best of friends and I hate driving them in traffic. Both are around the same price range at the 20k limit. Suggestions? Comments? Concerns? Are there any good places to look for them at besides auto trader and craigslist?

The '11s still have the 3.8 engine that has oiling issues (they start blowing oil past the rings). Honestly I would stay away from them with that kind of mileage. Look for either a late '12 (early '12s had head cracking issues) or go earlier with a TJ; '06 or earlier.

Just my 2 cents

I would agree here. 04-06 LJ (2door unlimited model with longer wheel base) for around 14-17k or try and find a 12 or newer. For around 25k you could get a new sport model if you shop right. I would not recommend that 3.8 personally. It's just a dog to drive.

Yep, stay away from the v6. Go older with the LJ and the 4.0. Those motors go 250,000 miles easily if taken care of and have twice, if not three times the torque. Then get a long arm suspension lift and go anywhere you want.
