Intruder shot in South Side break-in
A burglar who interrupted a South Side man's viewing of the Penguins' Game 3 victory likely will survive the bullet wound he suffered in the ensuing confrontation, police said Thursday.
Dale Boehm, 19, and an unidentified man kicked in the back door of a home in the 3100 block of Josephine Street about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, Pittsburgh police said.
A 25-year-old man was inside the home watching the third Stanley Cup finals game. The resident, whom police did not name, told detectives he grabbed his gun when he heard noises downstairs.
When he walked into his kitchen, the two intruders began shooting at him, police said. He returned fire and shot Boehm in the stomach, police said. The home's occupant was not injured, police said.
Boehm was in serious condition at UPMC Mercy in Uptown, police Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki said. He was under police guard and being treated for a bullet wound in the liver, Stangrecki said.
Police charged Boehm with burglary, robbery and aggravated assault.
The other intruder, whom police have not been able to identify, escaped, and it isn't known if he was injured. Investigators found a handgun and baseball bat near a wooded area outside the house.
The man who shot Boehm will not be charged, Stangrecki said.
"It doesn't appear he did anything wrong," he said. "Someone else broke into the house."
Investigators don't believe the two intruders knew him.
"We don't know why they targeted him and not someone else," Stangrecki said. "Evidently they thought he had something of value inside the house."
Debria Ebaugh, 29, lives across the street from where the break-in occurred. She and her husband were watching the Penguins beat the Detroit Red Wings when they heard what they thought were fireworks.
"It was loud," said Ebaugh, who has lived on Josephine Street for eight years but didn't know the neighbor who shot the intruder. "It's quiet up here. We don't have any problems. This is unusual."
hell yes! i love hearing stories like this! :D
The fact that the intruders were armed shows they were definitely up to no good. In cases like that, I say you may fire when ready Gridley....
