Default if this were California...

The guy would be brought up on charges of murder without cause, owning a deadly weapon for harming the masses......I love happy endings

It's possible. It might have a slim chance of being justified in California since the residences were cornered with no escape, and being threatened. Then again, maybe the bad guy wouldn't have done anything.
