You mean he was profiling the victim??? That pisses me off to no end. I had a similar thing happen to me and I ripped into the cop with a vengeance. I didn't even utter a word and the cop walked over to run my plates before he would talk to me, and I had approached him!!!

I have found a lot of inexpensive stuff here http://www.x10.com/homepage.htm but I have also found a bunch of crap. You have to be careful to know exactly what you really need. I ordered some of the "wireless" cameras, only to find out that they work on the same frequencies as my wireless phones (and most other wireless phones out there) so you could not operate the phones and the cameras at the same time. There is also the issue that you have to plug in the cameras, they are not battery operated.

Anyhow, I would get cameras that have microphones in them and motion sensor (to limit the amount of data being recorded where there is no movement), oh and wide angle. Definitely wide angle, unless you are placing them in a narrow area. The more info you get, the better. Map out all of the areas you want monitored, order enough cameras to blanket the area, have the recorder in a centralized location and start recording. Be sure to review the recordings often, as it will take some time.

X10 sells a lot of home automation gadgets. I don't have much faith in their security products.

Could be. The stuff I got there several years ago was pretty cheap. I only used that system for a little while because of the wireless interference with the phones. It served its purpose though and I was happy with that. At the shop my boss has Swann surveillance cameras and recorder. Some of the cameras are crapping out though, after a couple of years in use. He was planning on replacing those cameras with wide-angle ones here soon anyhow. They have some recorders that you can zoom in and do all sorts of stuff on playback. He's thinking of upgrading to one of those too. The current system can be monitored remotely online as well but I think you can only view current activity.
