I use a bag of dried split peas. I like to season with a bay leaf or two, garlic, I cut up onions and carrots in it. Some people put ham or sausage in it but I don't. Many times, instead of water I use Chicken Stock as the base or sometimes Vegetable Broth. Then I just keep tasting it and adding whatever it seems to be missing.
