NY suspect accused of killing mom, raping girl beaten in jail

Published March 16, 2013

March 15, 2013: New York State Police investigate a car involved in a fatal carjacking on Verplank Road, Clay, N.Y. (AP)

Authorities say a man accused of killing a Syracuse woman and raping her 10-year-old daughter during a carjacking was beaten and suffered a broken nose on his first day in jail.

The Post-Standard, of Syracuse, reports that David Renz had a swollen face and tissues stuffed up both nostrils when he appeared in federal court Friday to face a probation violation charge.

His attorneys say Renz was assaulted by other inmates at the Onondaga County Justice Center, where he was taken following his arrest Thursday night.

Sheriff Kevin Walsh told the newspaper he was looking into why Renz was put into a holding area with other prisoners.

Renz faces charges that he abducted the mother and daughter as they left a gymnastics class in the Syracuse suburb of Clay.

Probation officials are still investigating how Renz, who has been charged with possessing child pornography managed to cut off his electronic monitoring bracelet before committing his latest crime.

Renz abducted the school librarian and her daughter as they left a gymnastics class Thursday night at a mall in the Syracuse suburb of Clay, about 150 miles west of Albany, state police said Friday.

Renz bound both victims, raped the girl and drove a short distance to a spot where the girl escaped and was found by a passing motorist, troopers said.

The motorist told 911 dispatchers he saw a man running away, allowing police to quickly send in officers on the ground and a sheriff's helicopter in the air. Renz was caught a short time later near a wooded area.

It was unclear how the girl escaped or when her mother was killed, authorities said.

"We're still trying to piece the timeline together," Trooper Jack Keller said.

The girl was being treated at a hospital Friday. Her mother died from multiple stab wounds.

Renz, 29, had been charged in January with possession of child pornography and allowed to remain free under terms that included staying off the Internet and away from places including schools, parks and arcades. He lost his job at a supermarket, moved in with his mother and hadn't been able to find other work after his arrest, according to court documents.

Federal authorities said he cut his electronic monitoring device off his ankle shortly before Thursday's attacks. Probation officials are investigating whether Renz was able to get around an alert that is supposed to go off if the ankle bracelet is removed, Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney John Duncan said.

Renz was arraigned Friday on murder, rape and kidnapping charges and was held without bail. The lawyer assigned to his case, Ken Moynihan, didn't return a call seeking comment.

The Associated Press generally doesn't publish information that could identify potential sex crime victims and isn't naming the woman to protect the girl's identity.

According to an FBI criminal complaint, agents who went to the North Syracuse apartment where Renz was living in June found in his bedroom four computers that he told them he used to view adult pornography.

Agent Alix Skelton said Renz eventually admitted using the Internet for the past six years to download child porn to a drive on one of the machines, which he turned over to the agents. Technicians determined in November that it had an encrypted hard drive, and Skelton said Renz provided the encryption key. Agents reviewing the drive in December found about 100 gigabytes of child porn comprising more than 500 videos and more than 3,000 images, according to the complaint.

Among the images were two showing sex acts involving prepubescent girls, said Skelton, a member of a unit that targets people involved in online exploitation of children.

Renz was charged Jan. 9 in federal court with possession of child pornography. On Jan. 29, a judge granted a prosecutor's request for an extension of the time required for grand jury action so investigators could continue going over "numerous items of electric media" for additional evidence.

Renz, who authorities said had no prior police record, was released after agreeing to stay at home at night with an electronic monitor and away from any place he might encounter children.

Late Friday afternoon, state police turned Renz over to federal authorities, who will hold him for violating the terms of his release, court documents said.

Duncan said the cases against him will continue in federal and state courts.

The lawyer assigned to Renz in the child porn case, James Greenwald, didn't return a call seeking comment Friday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Sad, thats just 45 minutes down the road from me, the POS should never been released. Possessing and distributing child porn is very serious and promotes violent crimes. I do believe GPS Bracelets are useful but never for any crime that has violence tied to it. Strangely, honor among thieves will be the court where he is truly judged for his actions, hes already gotten indoctrinated and unless hes in solitary, he wont likely survive the stay at the Onondaga Crow Bar Hotel!

This is a perfect example of why the promise of protection from Uncle Sugar is a load of BS. The PO****s bracelet was found in a school zone wheere he cut it off, they didnt catch the guy for a couple days and by then, it was too late. I can hear his Lawyer describing how safe we should feel that his client would be tagged with a High tech squealer, the public has nothing to worry about. Obviously no one was watching the E-map cause they would have seen him where he wasnt supposed to be and sent in the troops.

The answer to everything bad in life is call 911 and wait for the coroner. The young Woman who lost her mother and was sexually brutalized deserves a better response than "sorry" from those sworn to defend us all. They should make special GPS Bracelets for garbage like this, if they stray 2' out of the prisons without bars zone, it explodes and they lose a leg! They wont do that twice!

The inmates need to give this subhuman the same treatment he gave the poor little girl on a daily basis. He needs to get use to it anyways when he suffers in hell.

Like the man said.......
Give me the ball........Can I have him till he goes to trial......Cutting paper to see if my knives are sharp enough is getting old.......;)

The absolute hypocrisy of the thing gets me. At the same time Andy of Albany is telling me to give up my rights to self defend because they have our backsides; they continually drop the ball in ways that let you know that 911 wont help do anything but document the crime scene. Being a RDIDd Felon in a school zone and setting off alarms at HQ should have ended his walkabout within minutes but that didnt happen so more dead innocent people and nobody official charged with controlling this animal will be held responsible for aiding the killer in the death of that woman and the brutal rape of her daughter.

persoanlly, i hope there is plenty more in store for him, on a daily basis! he should suffer everyday for the rest of his life. i suspect he's a sicker individual than they think.

To bad they didn't set bail for him again, we could all chip in the bail money and have Webley pay it, then the dude could "jump bail" permanently if you know what I mean. ;) Shoot, Shovel and Shut up comes to mind or a very slow ride through a wood chipper.

It is time for Judicial Immunity to come to an end. The Judge that released him is to blame as much as he is. He should be sued and lose his home and retirement. How about he have to pay for the girl's medical bills, counseling sessions and $1000 a month for the rest of her life.

Actually a straightened paper clip stuck up the urethra and a lighter warming the other end would be the first thing I would to to this poop stain.

Child porn is just a life style choice according to the liberals in charge of the courts and new york legislature.
