That's great news, the best I've heard in a while. If the offending officer has any brains, he has gotten rid of all the other ill begotten firearms he has. Not saying he has more, but chances are your friend's death is not the 1st situation this cop has overstepped his authority. Just my couple of pennies.

I'm glad the fam got the gun back. However, i'm wondering what would happen if i borrowed some stranger's firearm & upon returning it sometime later, after denying having it, apologized profusely. Perhaps the audit will entain some disciplinary procedures, but i really think this was a "theft" and should be handled by a judge. If this officer isn't corrected by the courts, it will probably color the entire family's opinion of police officers.

I would suggest sending the information you have to the state police to insure an external audit is conducted. This is a serious issue, if a regular joe was to take a pistol that didn't belong to them they would be facing jail time, an appoligy wouldn't be enough (sorry I stole your pistol). LEO's are held to at least to that standard if not a higher standard.

Absolutely. In many states, the State Police serve as a quasi internal affairs funtion over smaller local departments. And frankly, if they find someone that is dirty, it is probably not there first time, and there is no "blue wall" with that.

When I said COP, I meant Chief Of Police. My fault. Another Officer got involved in this. The Blue wall failed. He pointed the finger at the thief also. I am so happy I did not have to open my mouth to the Chief. The offender is now under investigation, for many missing items. This ended very well as far as I'm concerned.

That's why I want to live there... the system works...
Glad for you and glad for the family of your friend.
