You may read whatever you want, but that does not mean I have to. I am more into reading history books and learning from them, than works of fiction. I still haven't decided what catagory the ones I do read fall into, the "Holy Bible" and the "Consitution of the United States of America".

Good books to read, be sure you read them from cover to cover.

Jim

No one said you had to read it! Your free to choose whatever the hell you want, I don't care!! At least go read the Wikipedia page about it if your interested in knowing some common facts on which to base your opinions on.

I want either less corruption or more opportunity to participate in it.

I'll just say I live in Lake County, and we had a mayoral race that left me looking at a bunch of good 'ol boys and girls with nothing better to do. Shallow gene pool to say the least.

Not always for what is popular that will get them re-elected or what is best for their own personal interest.

While we may not agree with them (and I disagree often with them), no where will I call them insincere in what they are doing.

Jim

I did see that you were a former elected official, and for that, thanks for trying to do your part. General statement - we really don't seem to be getting the best and brightest going into politics anymore. I find it hard to believe your statement that most politicians are truly voting on what they think is best for those that put them in office - that's a being a nanny. What their personal opinion of best is not why they were elected - it was to represent our voices. Fortunately the majority of gun owner voices have spoken so far in this particulare topic, to try to educate 'well meaning' politicians that can't even hold a gun properly or know how bullets work before they put idiotic, feel-good laws for those that put them into office that do nothing to address the actual problem.

As for your reluctance to read 'socialist propaganda,' you lose out. I'm presuming you havent read the Quran (I haven't). But my understanding is it isn't all about suicide boomers. Last I checked (and I may be wrong), more people have been killed in the name of the Old and New Testament than any other religion. I'm Christian, so I'm not bashing The Bible.

My point is if you feel the opposition is your enemy, know your enemy. How many politicians have tried to make gun arguments without knowing a damn thing about guns. You're saying Ann Rynd is a Marxist nutjob without knowing a thing about what she said...

It amazes me how some people talk out of their a$$ without knowing a dang thing about the subject of the thread. If I decide to enter a conversation I usually try to be somewhat familiar with the subject so I do not look like a total imbecile.

Boring & dry? Nah, It picks up a bit after about page 350ish. It requires a great deal of dedication to get to the "meat" of the book. Love Rand, hate Rand, doesn't matter, John Galt's speech is a seriously long winded affair. Never say with one word what can be said with 10.

Prophesy . Atlas Shrugged is the Objectivist "Bible" . Of course it is a work of fiction ; so is the actual Bible .

" Man's mind, say the mystics of spirit, must be subordinated to the will of God . Man's mind, say the mystics of muscle, must be subordinated to the will of Society. Man's standard of value, say the mystics of spirit, is the pleasure of God, whose standards are beyond man's power of comprehension and must be accepted on faith . Man's standard of value, say the mystics of muscle, is the pleasure of Society , whose standards are beyond man's right of judgment and must be accepted as a primary absolute. The purpose of man's life, say both, is to become an abject zombie who serves a purpose he does not know, for reasons he is not to question .
His reward, say the mystics of spirit, will be given him beyond the grave. His reward, say the mystics of muscle, will be given on earth--to his great-grandchildren . "

- John Galt- P.1027 Atlas Shrugged

" Rationality is the recognition of the fact that existence exists, that nothing can alter the truth and nothing can take precedence over that act of perceiving it, which is thinking--that the mind is one's only judge of values and one's only guide of action--that reason is an absolute that permits no compromise--that a concession to the irrational invalidates one's consciousness and turns it from the task of perceiving to the task of faking reality--that the alleged short-cut to knowledge, which is faith, is only a short-circuit destroying the mind--..."

-John Galt- from Atlas Shrugged, P. 1018

Jim I have read the bible several times and the Constitution dozens of times. And several dozen SCOTUS decisions on Constitutional questions.

I am also a fan of non-fiction, especially military history.

But having said that, I still enjoy good fiction. The fictional scenarios of today are very often the actual scenarios of tomorrow. Especially in historical fiction, science fiction and political fiction.

As for Rand's work, it's neither fact nor fiction. It's philosophy. Like Plato's "Republic" or Kierkegaard's "Truth or Subjectivity." Often, we can learn as much from great thinkers as we do from provable fact.

Gentlemen :
I hope everyone including Jim gets a chance to read Francisco D'Anconia's speech on money . It starts around Page 410 of Atlas Shrugged . It may be the best piece of writing you ever read and it is thought-provoking to say the least .
There are no real people in the book . It is a novel pure and simple . Ayn Rand intended it to be enjoyable as entertainment reading even if the reader ignored the ideas . She combined elements of suspense, science fiction, romance, mystery and a saga . The result is a book that's sold over 8 million copies, that is the best-selling novel of all time and this despite some very harsh reviews from the critics .
In a national poll, this book placed second as the book people said influenced their lives the most . The Bible won .
The book depicts a world that has generally gone communist and a U.S. of A. that is being ruined by bad philosophy . The book is an attack on socialism, mysticism, facism and altruism . It presents a moral defense of capitalism ( not the usual defense based on pragmatism and tradition ) .
I don't think it is impossible to do what the great producers did in the book ; to launch a capitalist strike .
Maybe we can declare a John Galt Day : a day for a general strike to crash partially-socialist America . We could declare ourselves "slaves no more" !
Ayn Rand found that many people didn't fully comprehend her ideas when they read the book so she gave a series of lectures later . See the links below for more :
