You could always try recreating this. Hypothetically it should have worked, in reality, it didn't....

Sounds like it only failed because the troops were ordered to leave their posts and go elsewhere. It would be interesting to recreate (hypothetically) such a situation and see what that outcome might be.

That seems to be the case. But it's a lesson for today as well. You can't hide behind anything without also having the ability to back it up. Had the French not pulled out the supporting troops, the war might have gone differently. Maybe there were Nazi symps in the French War Ministry, sort of like government functionaries today bending over for our enemies....

Ok, this thread has not panned out. I'm talking wish list bunker that can be built and supplied by the average Hans, and it turned into a very pricey bunker that the French built. Thanks.

Try building a pillbox.

It seems that you can use many building material types to construct it: block, brick, bags of cement. Excavate and construct and rebury to almost completely hide it, or leave half exposed, or just build on level ground.

Someone with rudimentary skills should be able to pour concrete and rebar to reinforce. Make it as big or small as you want. Stock it with food and live in it or use it as an emergency shelter for short term trouble. Run water and electricity to it underground. Your choice.
