Default How do you know?

Normally, if you have to kill an intruder, you tell the 9-1-1 operator: "Shots fired, intruder down." then you answer her questions.

I was having coffee with a couple of other retired old cops last week and one of them told an interesting story.

He was a sergeant, and on all shots fired calls, a supervisor is dispatched as well as patrolmen.

A guy called 9-1-1 and said:

Shots fired, intruder dead.

The dispatcher told him that police and an ambulance were enroute.

The caller replied that an ambulance wasn;t need, but perhaps the coroner was.

The dispatcher asked if the caller was the homeowner.

The caller said, that no, he was a neighbor, and he was calling because the homeowner was too upset to be coherent.

The sergeant said that when he arrived on scene, he asked the neighbor why he thought an ambulance wasn't needed.

the neighbor said that the intruder was already dead.

The sergeant asked him how he knew the interuder was actually dead.

The neighbor said "Because I'm chief of surgery at St. Luke's."

There's a good reason they call an attorney a "mouthpiece".

Let him do the talking. Everyone will wait till he gets there.

I think a surgeon is pretty well qualified to determine if someone is dead.

Oh, absolutely agreed. I also think an attorney is qualified to decide

what I should and should NOT say, in front of the police...

"Patient vitals incompatible with life" is the current line 'round here on DOS (Dead On Scene) calls. Cranium evacuated? Pretty much incompatible with life.

And to think, I opened this thinking i was going to read the following for the ending:

Dispatch: Sir, are you sure he is dead?

Caller: Hold on a second. Puts phone down, gunshot heard in the BG.

Phone picked back up.

Caller: Yep. I'm sure he is now. What do you need me to do next?

Seriously, tell them where and what, but admit nothing without a lawyer present. To that LEO arriving on scene, you are a suspect until proven otherwise, and he is not your friend at that moment. you nwill be detained and questioned, and the only answer you need to give is:

"I would like my attorney present when i am questioned."

The conversation is over until the time that said attorney has arrived. He or she will ask to speak to you privately, and then the two of you will talk to LE after that meeting. It's going to cost you a fair amount of cash to keep your @$$ out of jail at that point, but your odds of not having to go upstate for the next 25 years.

Perhaps search for some gunfight insurance company that would pay for a Pro 2nd Amendment lawyer...
