You can take the radiator cap of your quarter ton and drive a half ton truck under it. Seriously you will have to change all the suspension under the truck. If you just change the rear springs and sway bar the truck will not drive right. I would look for a suburban with a towing package and change everything including the rear end.

John deer is right, plus adding plates to the frame to make it stronger by the axles. Real pain. One thing that makes a small difference would be "helper" springs.

i'm assuming you mean 1500 (1/2 ton) to 2500 (3/4 ton).there are a lot of differences.most of the time its springs,shocks,frame and a lot of the time axles.selling and buying would be your best option.If you only need to haul big loads occasionally you could get a set of airbag helpers for the rear.

you could also find a 3/4 ton with a blown motor,or bad body damage and swap the motor/body from your 1/2 ton,but that would be more work than its worth (to me anyway).

Pretty sure the suburbans are a half ton vehicle. The s-10s and blazers were the quarter ton. There's more to the payload rating than just the springs though. I think the 99s had the 700r4 which will give up at life the first time you try to tow a small car. The gm 10 bolt axle only has a 8.5" ring gear which will over heat and burn up and ruin carrier bearings. The pinion could shear or the axle shafts could snap the first time you get n the throttle too much with a load. It probably only has 3.21-3.55 gears which is for gas milage, not towing. The small block will b begging for a lower gear ratio. After all that is addressed then you can move on to a stiffer set of springs. Best bet is to go buy a cheap 2wd 3/4 ton if you wanna do any towing on a budget

Easy.! 500lbs.=1/4ton , 500lbs.+500lbs. = 1/2 ton or 1000lbs. , and so on..!

A 1500 is a 1/2 ton. A 2500 is a 3/4. And a 3500 is a 1 ton. A 1/4 ton would be like a S10.

If you are trying to change a 1500 to a 2500 you will need to change everything. It depends on how much you won't to haul. The suspension will have to be upgraded. The rear end may not take the extra weight so you will need to change that. The engine might need more power. Bigger radiator, trans cooler, gearing, even the tires have a weight limit.

bingo...the guy mislead me. he told me his 1500 suburban was 1/4 ton. so its 1/2 ton great!
i thought it was when i saw his tow package in back.
he wants to tow a truck on a trailer with it. sorta like what i want to do with my 2500 gmc. i know mines 3/4 ton and can do it, but i wasnt sure about his. i know avis or uhaul wont let him rent a trailer...they say its not powerful enough and that the trailer would be pushing him down the road.

now ive seen farmers pulling 5 ton trailers with tractors on them on those 3/4 ton 2500's. but i know that tractor is more than 3/4 ton! whats the way you determine payload safety?
