I will buy the extra diesel and pull my travel trailer wherever I go. Diesel is cheap, an unnecessary risk to life and limb is not.

I guess I have been lucky. In my 40 years of flying I stayed in hotels an average of over 100 nites a year and not once did I have a security problem.

This is being addressed as we talk about it. I manage a hotel. I have the locks in question. They are the Onity brand. A fix has been available for several months now. I purchased all new circuit boards and installed them in my locks. We were done with 107 rooms in just couple of weeks. Choice Hotels is pushing hard against the manufacturer. They are making them replace any locks that were made in the last 10 years for free. All of the older ones are costing the hotel $11 each. I felt that was a cheap price to upgrade my old locks. This will be a thing of the past for all of the reputable brand hotels by the end of the year. I would not stay at an independant hotel with Onity locks. Franchisees have too much to lose to not get it done.

1. Never leave anything of very high value in a hotel room
2. If you have to, use the safe. If there is not one in the room, hotels are generally required to provide one- no charge- for guests.
3. When in the room, use a rubber door stop set about 1-2 inches back from the opening edge of the door.
4. Tip your maid. Probably has nothing to do with security, but they generally have a fairly crappy job, and a couple of bucks can go a long way.

One would hardly feel safe let alone sleep at night with news like that. Maybe one should invest in a 'traveller's doorstop' to at least prevent room invasion at night.
