Doesn't he have a .22? Don't you have a 10/22 to loan him? A .22 Stinger would put THIS fat boy down squealing.

On Crack, or phencyclidine, a perp wouldn't even feel it. The ball bat wouldn't have any effect either. Buy the guy a model 870 pump. Put a damned ribbon on it and say Merry Christmas.

Here's one for $430 http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=140997759

After finding the general consensus here being that a rifle is no solution for home defense I think I’ve devised a solution. I'm going to go buy the pardner pump and a few boxes of 00, give it to his wife as a gift to the family since hubby is being a stubborn douche Hopefully she will relinquish it to him (she doesn't really have any firearms training, not being sexist) and I’m hoping that will be the end of it.

I very sincerely appreciate all the opinions given tonight. I thank you all.

I watched a show called 'Best Defense' last season. There was an episode where they showed the penetration of various weapons: 9mm, 45acp, 12guage, and an AR-15. The 12guage with buckshot had more penetration through several walls of sheetrock than the .223 round. The .223 round tumbled after the second wall and failed to penetrate the third or fourth.

From what I gathered, they reccomended a 12 guage with lighter loads than buckshot or slug. Rob Pinkus shot a dummy point blank with 7 1/2 shot. It looked devastating, but I couldn't say how much it actually penetrated.

I agree with everyone else, don't use a hi-power rifle (especially in an apartment!) use a shotgun with your preferred loads.

Tell him to quit being such a knucklehead and let a rifle go, then buy a pistol and shotgun.

I suggest he uses the butt end of his rifle to beat the ever loving crap out of a BG.

Moss-that is super nice, I hope he takes it.

Well, taking it as a given that THOSE are the weapons and calibers that WILL be used- because the gent will not accept help from a friend- ANY of them will penetrate multiple layers of drywall, and at close range, multiple layers of bad guy.

Least overpenetration? Pick the lowest energy round (mass times speed squared) and go for a soft point bullet.

Ideal? Ask your friend if he can "store" a cheap 12 g shotgun for you.

I am iffy on loaning guns to people. I would be more apte to buy a shotgun and give it to him.

Single shot H&R shotguns run $200 maybe take a collection from some of your buddies to get him one.

A rifle will work for a HD weapon but you need to be in a rual area and have lots and lost of land. If you have say 20 or so acres then a short rifle like an M4 variant of the AR-15 would be a good choice with a Tactical Light folding stock and 18" barrel.

I am sure the 22-250 is a heavy barrel varmint rifle and the 243 and others are nice hunting rifles. they are going to hinder movement and be way too powerful at the range of an appartment. If you handload then you can use pistol powder reduced loads if their are any in reloading manuals.

That sounds like the best solution to me. Later on, let him buy it or return it when his environment improves.
