I'd better get in the "have this woman talk with my wife" line. You do carpentry and you're not only tolerant of your husband's enjoyment of firearms, but you want to buy him some? Your husband really is a very lucky man.

If he has a concealed carry permit, I might recommend a Sig Sauer P226 or P229. Solid, unattractive, and purely functional.

ScottG mentioned the Garand, which I would also recommend. An AR-15 can be had in your price range.
