"Twelve O'Clock High" wasn't as good as I remembered it . When I saw it recently, I thought the plot about the bomber crews cracking mentally was lame ; In real life, despite horrible losses, our bomber crews were never turned back from a target by enemy action.
The movie had a beautifully-filmed beginning in which an aging American ex-flier visits his former bomber base alone and is swept up in a flashback as his memories bring the base to life again .
The ending was moving too, as the victorious airmen drink and celebrate the war's end . The same man we saw at the beginning is informed he is drunk and replies, " Yes. I think I shall stay drunk. "
The documentary, " The Memphis Belle " is a classic of WWII propaganda . The more recent movie made the crew look like kids . The book, The Man Who Flew The Memphis Belle by Robert Morgan gives the whole story .
