I can't believe with all these movies there isn't even a commercial break to run to the fridge!

Same as in Braveheart, another great war-ish film, that didn't have the money to actually build the bridge the first battle of the movie should have taken place on and at...

The didn't know how nor have the time to show the drama of shutting down the Eastern front while the two snipers dueled.

Platoon is another good wari-ish movie.

"The Sands of Iwo Jima" to me is the classic standard by which all WW2 movies are judged.

"When Trumpets Fade", about the longest, single battle ever fought by the US Army, the Battle of Hürtgen Forest.

A true meat grinder along the German border against well entrenched and motivated German troops.

I had and read " One Shot One Kill " by Charles Sasser in paperback, as a matter of fact . I've read stuff on the Internet that casts doubt on the sniper duel story . Then there is the question of plausibility :

1) Would it have been possible to get all of the soldiers on both sides to cease fire to allow two snipers to fight to the death ?
2) If the Germans sent Koenig to Russia to hunt Zeitsev, what were the odds that he'd find Zeitsev, let alone get a shot at him ? I doubt they'd have sent him just to kill Zeitsev ; more likely he was sent simply to serve as an expert sniper .

Zeitsev's book is available . I've not read it but have read reviews of the book that say the movie is pure fiction. LINK : http://www.amazon.com/gp/search?index=books&linkCode=qs&keywords=1848325657

Heres a good link : http://www.cybersniper.com/stalingrad/

Jeff Cooper said that " Platoon " was the best piece of communist disinformation to come along in some time .

I noticed that leftist film maker Oliver Stone seemed to put every American atrocity from the Vietnam War into this one movie .

The ending was pure Hollywood, with Sergeant Elias playing the part of a 'John Wayne' type, running through the jungle killing enemy troops . A calculated crowd pleaser ending .

My liberal relative cried when he saw the movie .

If you read the book, "Enemy at the Gates: The Battle for Stalingrad"" nonfiction by William Craig (1973) the movie is pretty hokey. The book devotes about two or three pages to the "great sniper duel."

BTW, the book is an excellent work for WW2 history buffs.

"Twelve O'Clock High" wasn't as good as I remembered it . When I saw it recently, I thought the plot about the bomber crews cracking mentally was lame ; In real life, despite horrible losses, our bomber crews were never turned back from a target by enemy action.

The movie had a beautifully-filmed beginning in which an aging American ex-flier visits his former bomber base alone and is swept up in a flashback as his memories bring the base to life again .

The ending was moving too, as the victorious airmen drink and celebrate the war's end . The same man we saw at the beginning is informed he is drunk and replies, " Yes. I think I shall stay drunk. "

The documentary, " The Memphis Belle " is a classic of WWII propaganda . The more recent movie made the crew look like kids . The book, The Man Who Flew The Memphis Belle by Robert Morgan gives the whole story .
