Going to war

They were cute as we watched from our breakfast nook, scurrying to and fro eating bits of pecans that have fallen from our trees. They were slightly less cute when I thought, "Hey, I should harvest some pecans for a pie." with nary a pecan to be found without a mouthful taken from its meat.

And now, as I have discovered that fruit actually CAN grow in DFW, with the discovery of a massive pear tree in the neighborhood, I began to get excited when my little pear sprouts began to blossom. As I shared this news with my neighbor, I was informed that he has two pear trees of his own, except those little furry bastages always nibble them off the stem prior to becoming edible.

My question is this: Aside from firearms, what is the best way to murder squirrels or keep them from invading the crops? I live in the burbs, so a trebuchet is impractical, and poison doesn't seem wise with children in the house. I need some black op, freedom loving, squirrel murdering ninja something or others to solve this problem. Ideas?

An air rifle seems to be the best option.

A high quality hunting air rifle.

Not only do you save your peaches....you can eat some squirrels too.

This might work for you!

Get a HavAHart cage and use peanut butter with sunflower seeds. When you catch one take it over 5 miles away and release it. May have to repeat process.

Or once you catch it, you can gas it, if ultimate goal is Death to the Rodent

Trapping Squirrels

I don't know what your regs are in the US but squirrel cage traps would do the trick, and even using a Larsen Trap will give good results - speaking from experience. You will also have the flexibility of being able to trap Corvids if they become a nusance.

This has a good deal of info even if it isn't practical for you to buy from them (click the squirrel):

I called the dog catcher and he brought me a neat box like trap - when I caught them he came got them and let them out in the park.

We did this 5 times and they are gone.

Don't know if this guy ever did catch this squirrel:D

I say trap them. If your neighbors see you picking up dead squirrels on a regular basis they might get wise. Trap them and kill them or trap them and release them 20 miles away.

YOu could always get a Ruger MkII like this one.

Use subsonic ammo and no one will ever hear you with that puppy.

I vote for air rifle and squirrel ks-bobs. :)

Oh, and squirrels mate for life. Shoot one, and you know which one is it's mate. Then you shoot the mate.
