Default Giving Thanks

ANZAC Day is fast approaching and I just wanted to share with you guys how I'll be commemerating all of those who have given their lives in conflicts that Australians have been involved in.

I'll be heading home where I'll attend the candle-lit dawn service at the cemetary. The local cemetary is situated at the top of a hill and is the first place in town to see the sun when it rises. A bugeler plays 'Reveille' a couple of hours before sunrise to start the ceremony before a specialised church service is held detailing the history of the ANZACs and conflicts since. Then there is an opportunity to lay wreaths at the ANZAC epitah. Accompanied by bagpipes, the gathering then visits the graves of all of the Diggers and volunteers (such as the wives of veterans) from the area who have died in the year previous. A small offering is made at each grave by the family and a few choice words are spoken. Usually coinciding with sunrise, 'The Last Post' is then played accompanied by a flyover dump-and-burn from one or more F-111's. The service is a solemn one, but truely beautiful at the same time. It's definitely not a celebration of the dead, but rather an honouring. It's a very humbling experience, something which I have enjoyed every year since I was 8.

We then all head down to the RSL (Returned Serviceman's League) club for breakfast, followed by a full day of 'Two-Up'. Two-Up is a gambling game that the Diggers used to play in Turkey. It is illegal to play in Australia, however every ANZAC day the authorities turn a blind eye and allow it. It's excellent fun, and I managed to win $400 last year! It may seem callous, or even disrespectful to be gambling and drinking on a day which honours our fallen servicemen; but these are the very Australian freedoms and values which the men and women fought to protect. It also gives us a chance to buy those who are currently serving a beer, and even give them the chance to win some money off of us

How do you guys honour the fallen? I know you have a Veteren's Day, but what exactly do you do on it?

Lately I have gotten a tattoo on veterans day. I also reflect on all the fallen and their sacrifice. Then I tend to shed a tear or two watching programs about all those who will never come home to their families again. God bless them all.

Amen.

As we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them,
Nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun
And in the morning,
We will remember them.

Lest We Forget'

AMEN brother. I will never forget the sacrifices made by so few for so many. Blood sacrifices so that others may claim freedom.

Aus, I have April 25th marked on the calender. I will make it down to our local war memorial, remove my hat, lower my eyes and say a prayer for the fallen.

Dune, thankyou. That right there means more than you know, and is honestly why FTF is the best place on the 'Net.

For those that don't know, this is the dump-and-burn. Truely a sight to behold

May they rest in peace. You're a good man Aus.

I have the same utmost respect for the soldiers of our allies as I do our own soldiers. For those who don't know, Australia is the longest standing ally of the US. They are THE only country who has been on our side from day one.

Most awesome post, Aus. *intercontental fist bump or punch to the gullet-not sure what you Aussie men do to show respect*

They are all heroes.
