Wife and I listened to Girl With the Dragon Tattoo as a book on tape while driving on vacation in 2010. Then we got the book, then the other books, then the movies. While there were a few miscues in the books (Glocks don't have safeties, and if there is a .45 Magnum, I want one!), the books are excellently written overall. The author intended to write more with the same characters, but he died too soon. Gritty, raw, shocking... Yes, but well worth reading and/or watching (the Swedish versions, anyway).
And I too cheered at the payback she got on the a$$ who assaulted her.

"Then tell me this: Why would you want to hang around people that get uncomfortable, or even scared, about that kind of thing?" "Maybe to feel normal," I said. He laughed. "Normal's not all it's cracked up to be." "You think?" "Hell, I know." - from Spirits In The Wires, by Charles de Lint.
