A portion of high pressure gas from the cartridge being fired is used to extract the spent case and chamber a new cartridge.

As Silverado explained- if you see the term "gas operated semiauto"- that does not mean gasoline. A portion of the gasses created when the gun is fired is used to cycle the action. As opposed to being recoil operated, where the recoil makes action cycle, or blowback, where the firing actually pushes the fired case out of the chamber (usually kept for lower powered cartridges)

The other place you will find the term "gas" is with pellet or airsoft guns- they can be spring powered, electric, or pneumatic- and there are different gasses for different uses.
