OK, here's what we'll do. I'll set up a poll thread and we'll vote on tips in lots of 10. If you have a favorite tip, vote for the group of 10 that it is in.

For example, if you wand post 27 to win, then vote for group 21-30.

We'll let the thread go through Sun night 7/19/09. Then I'll set up another poll for the winning group of 10. At that time, we'll be able to vote for the individual tip who wins the free membership.

Sound good? Good, I'll get on it. I'll post a link to the new thread here as soon as I get it set up.

Thanks for playing everyone!

OK, heres the Primary Election polling place: Vote on the best Survival Tip Winner!
Once the Primary Election is done, I'll set up the General Election.

Gosh, I hope it goes better then the General Election last Nov.

OK, here's what we're doing...

Tip group 21-30, and 41-50 tied at 2 to 2 votes. Since there hasn't been much interest in voting on this, and since my SWMBO won't stop yacking in my ear long enough for me to concentrate on any of this, I'm going to end it as quickly as possible.

Therefore, I'm withdrawing my vote (which was for 21-30) that makes group 41-50 the winner of this round.

Since tip # 41-48 was by LegatoRedrivers, chances are he would have won anyway. But to be fair, tip # 49 was by Justen.223, and tip # 50 was by Chad.

So, you all win a free years membership to FTF.

I'll have the money in your account in the next 1 - 24 hours.

Thanks for the participation, and I'll try to organize my next Free Membership Give Away better next time.

Jesse, you truly are a gentleman and a scholar.

In recognition of this, and of a promise I made in a different thread, I will be holding my own membership giveaway sometime in the next couple of weeks, basically whenever I find the time to figure out how I want to run it, so stay tuned for that.

No problem guys. Thanks for participating.

Though I've been addicted to guns my whole life, I don't have much to add to the knowledge base found here.

I'm just trying to contribute in my own way.

Defaultservival tips

find water- dig a hole about 2 to 3 feet deep in a cone shape place a contaner at the bottom of the hole. drape a peice of material over the hole. the theory as the water evaperates from the ground the material catches it and drips into the container. ( i havent tested this one

finding north and south at night-
find the big dipper find the end of the big dipper. not the handle the other end. now draw an emaginary line virticly lining up with the end of the laddle follow up words it points to the north star, also the brights star in the sky. this is a very easy way to find it and know your on the right star turn a 180 degrees and look for a kite figure that is the south cross,

DefaultDesert Survival

I just wanted to add some desert survival tips I learned in the military.

1. Before going out drink plenty of water. Make sure your urine is clear then drink more water. The reason is, if you run out of water you can drink your urine up to two times before it makes you sick. (last resort of course)

2. You can suck on a button to get your saliva going.

3. Always travel at night and dig a hole deep enough to sit in for shade during the day. If you have a tarp you can put it over the hole your in for shade. (a shirt works as well)
Also by traveling at night you'll have a better chance of spotting lights in the distance.

That's all I can think of right now. Hope they help some.

Hey I just came across the other thread that this one originally started in. Not 30 minutes after my post did I get some unhelpful comments from I believe the very people that made the thread move to its present location.

Some additions to the good ideas I have heard:

As was noted for the needle compass - you can it magnetize it with a piece of silk, and it will point south if you are in the northern hemisphere (it will point north if you're in the southern hemisphere). The details are probably in this thread already, if not check out "Survival Tip of the Day" thread. I posted the details in it so they should be at the end.

Also for bringing a candle to help the matches last for fire starting - that's good, I suggest a tallow candle. Firstly, they usually come in blocks and can be cut to fit your survival pack, and second it's like an animal fat candle - if you get hungry enough, you can eat tallow! It's desperate but hopefully these help someone out.
