Wearing a watch can be an advantage for not only telling time, but the face (although small) can be used as a signaling mirror on bright day, which reportedly can be seen up to four miles away.

DefaultMarking the way.

Something I have never heard as a survival tactic but have often used at deer camp to find your way to and from the blind at night is ( and assuming that have a large knife or other sharp object) is every 20 yards or so make a mark on a tree exposing the white bark. It shows up well at night and can allow a search party to follow your trail and will also let you know if you had been in that spot previously. I would only do this if you are truely lost... no point in damaging trees just for the hell of it.

DefaultWater

This is a two part tactic... if you can find a stream or river, follow it down stream. Eventually it will lead to either (a) some sort of civilization or (b) a river which can also be followed down stream. The second part of this is if you have no means of purifying water, drink water from a moving stream. Still water is more likely to be stagnant and could contain bacteria such as E. coli, which can cause diarrhea and other illnesses.

DefaultThirst

If you are stranded at sea one of the most important necessity is water. Obviously you can't drink sea water, but if you are able to catch any fish, the eyeballs are made mostly of water. No it will not provide a whole lot but its better than nothing. I know it doesn't sound too appealing but survival is survival and in that type situation every thing counts

You can easily make a wooden bowl in the wild by cutting a thick tree root to the desired size and placing hot coals or embers on top of it. Give it a while, then simply dig out the charred bits of wood.

You can make a more effective smoke signal by adding grass, green leaves, or moss. This should create a highly visible white smoke.

If you by some chance happen into some quicksand, don't struggle. Simply spread your arms and legs and slowly roll onto your back. Salt water has a higher specific gravity than water, which is why it's easier to float on it. Quicksand is even denser; so if you relax, you should float right to the top.
If you know you're heading into an area with quicksand, carry a long pole. This can be used for testing the ground ahead of you, as well as an impromptu flotation device. Position the pole under your hips at a right angle to your spine.

If there is a chemical spill in your area, the best thing to do (unless otherwise advised by authorities) is to stay indoors. Close all doors and windows, place moist towels around the windows and doors to act as an air seal, and fill all your sinks and your bathtub with water. (If you have a gas mask or two in your SHTF bag, all the better )

You can administer the Heimlich maneuver on yourself if needed. Throw yourself against whatever's available (I.E. a table edge, counter, log, etc.) Target the area of the abdomen just below your ribs.

Perform the Heimlich maneuver on yourself

Aspirin is a derivative of willow bark; you can treat a headache in the wild by boiling a concoction with willow leaves and bark.

If, for whatever reason, you have to jump a long distance into a body of water, take a deep breath and jump feet first. Point your toes, place your hands to your sides (or around your head for protection if you're going over a waterfall or the like), and clench your buttocks. The sudden inrush of water from such a fall can rupture your colon.

And finally, a survival tip for everyone's bed friend should the collapse of society make it difficult to find a vet: You can treat chocolate poisoning in dogs by orally administering a hydrogen peroxide and water solution.

How to Detect and Treat Chocolate Poisoning in Dogs | eHow.com

(I suggest always take your friends to a vet when possible...I don't want to be responsible should anyone on the forum try to use this tip and lose a family member)

Oh, and car bombs are generally placed under the hood, inside hubcaps, or behind wheels. If you ever feel like you need to check...

Must we have to leave it at fifty? I've got more, I just don't want to hog the thread.

Defaultnavigating by the stars

If you find yourself in a situation where you must travel at night, navigation is key. Without a sense of north/south orientation you can become lost quickly. Especially when you get cocky and you just know where you are going. But knowing how to find the north star will always tell you which direction is which. To find the north star you need to be able to find the big dipper. Every one knows what the big dipper looks and if make a line from the two end stars(of the "cup") of the dipper (from bottom to top) it will point to the north star.

DefaultAnother fire starting tool...

As seen on survivor man... fire pistons work great, I made one out of a mini-maglite. Once the fuel runs out of your lighter, the sun goes down (magnifying glass technique) or you run out of your magnesium fire starter, a fire piston is invaluable. As long as you can find some tinder it will always work, in any weather condition. HERE is a great site for step by step instructions.

Also, a good signal mirror , whistle , and a DECENT (100+ Lumens) LED flashlight are essential. A LED light can be seen for miles when used as a signaling device.

A nice reliable .22 rifle will be great for hunting small game (most survival situations) and with proper shot placement can also be used as personal defense.
