Is the Automatic weapon a creation or was it an evolution of the first firearms?

I say it was an inevitable evolution. People always want bigger and better, after the single shot rifles came six shooters. After the bolt action rifles come automatic, it was evolution at its finest. I'm looking forward to what the next evolution in firearms is. I'm guessing its those bullets that explode at a certain distance so you can fire above a wall and kill things behind it.

That's an interesting question. Will the next "evolution" of firearms still utilize standard bullets as we would recognize them, or will we finally get those energy weapons the sci-fi shows have been promising us? I would love to get my hands on a phaser, gluon gun, or the infamous BFG 9/10k!

Perhaps the next evolution in guns will be the teleporter gun that just "BAMFS" a wad of rock salt into the target's arse?
