Is your second shift considered days? Because, I did midnights before and hated it. If I got three or four hours of sleep I was doing good.

when i worked 3rd shift for many years, i would stay up when i got home in the morning until about noon or 1 pm, then sleep till about an hour before it was time to get ready for work.

What I'm working now is considered second shift. I get a shift differential but not as big a differential as when I go on nights.

I prefer going to sleep as soon as possible so I can be up in the evening before work to visit with family, friends, etc.

I live alone and have no trouble sleeping whenever I want and as much as I want. I did NOT work the off shifts when I was raising kids. I didn't want to leave the kids unattended and I would never have gotten any sleep.

I don't like second shift. I get home close to midnight. I take care of the dogs, maybe throw a load of laundry in or do dishes, something simple and quick. Then I check FTF and I'm in bed about 0130. I try to get up around 0900 but sometimes I just can't/don't get up and I sleep a little later. I get up a couple times in the night and sometimes have trouble falling back to sleep but that happens no matter what shift I work and when I sleep.

when i worked 3rd shift, i went to work at 10 pm and got off at 9 am. when i got home in the morning i did yardwork, ran errands and other things until about noon or 1 pm. i usually got up about 8 or 9 pm and would eat and get ready for work.

A very long tiring day today. I just had an orange with peanut butter.
Relax for an hour, then to bed.

Years ago when I worked Midnite to 8:00 AM I found if I used a fan that made some background noise it would drown out a lot of other noise, and I could sleep better. The old window air conditioner worked like a charm.
