All I can say is when I was in I was a 13 Foxtrot, and if you wanted something taken out you called your Forward Observer..............
There are two main duties associated with Fire Support Teams according to general military doctrine and the U.S. Army Technique Publication (ATP) 3-09.30. Primary responsibilities of FiSTs are to "bring all means of indirect fire in support of the Maneuver Commander." This includes all Indirect Fire(IDF) Assets (Artillery, Mortars, Naval Gunfire and close-air-support [CAS]). Secondary duties consist of communicating battlefield intelligence such as enemy locations, strength, and activities to Command. COLT(all FiST) and LRS(mixed FiST-Cav Scout-Pathfinders) are brigade-level reconnaissance assets.
They are also assigned to Special Forces and Special Operations Units.

Well since someone resurrected the thread from the bowels of FTF I will post what I know of as SF.

Army- Special Forces/Green Berets- These are the small teams that will jump in behind enemy lines and train the local paramilitary in tactics to harass the enemy. In modern times they have taken a huge leap in change of mission and will conduct anti terrorism missions and raids on HVT. Almost all will have basic parachutist badge and red beret, many will attend Military Free Fall school for HALO/HAHO training, some will attend combat diver schools, Most will be Air Assault qualified. Additionally they can attend almost any DOD school from sniper to language to sapper and EOD.

Rangers- Tan Berets and Ranger Tab(Used to be black) Rangers will almost always have Basic Parachutist badges before attempting R.I.P(Ranger Indoctrination Program) These guys are basically super duper infantry and have all the best tools and tons of training. They excel in large and rapid movements and also sometimes work in smaller fireteams, but are usually in a large element.

Air Assault- AKA Dopes on a Rope these guys when in an infantry unit are the ones you see rappelling onto a roof from a helicopter so they can assault downwards(Which is easier and safer) In a support mission they are the ones who slingload gear/mail/vehicles on a pallet to be airlifted by helos.

Airborne (Red Berets) These guys jump out of planes. A lot! These are the unholy offspring of the forefathers who parachuted behind enemy lines in WWII. Were talking Screaming Eagles here.

Sappers- (Sapper Tab) These guys are engineers who are experts at blowing **** up. I am talking they can show you how to rig a door breeching charge that will blow the damn door handle off on the other said and put it through the guy standing there with an AK ready to kill you.

Delta Force/AKA The Unit/1st SF operational detachment-Delta/ Charlie Beckwiths Gang/ and many others. These are your highly trained counter terrorist elite fighting force. These men(and unconfirmed women) operators are Tier 1 Special Forces experts in all forms of combat. They have specialties which include HVT, Hostage rescue, and many other things. They think nothing of sendin out a 1 man patrol into the heart of bad guy territory to gather intel. These guys are true shooters & looters and hoppers & poppers.

and the newest thing is Civil Affairs. I dont know much about these guys but they are usually a conglomerate of intel weenies and shooters and they will walk into some hairy places.

Marines Now you have MARSOC which have Critical Skills Operators (CSOs) and Special Operations Officers (SOOs) are assigned to billets at the team, company, and battalion levels. Enlisted Marines are designated CSOs and awarded the 0372 Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) while officers are awarded the Additional Military Occupational Skill (AMOS) of 0370. CSOs can stay in the fight with MARSOC for the duration of their Marine Corps career. I never dealt with any of these guys, but have heard they are excellent operators.

and Force Recon are exactly what the name implies they go behind enemy lines and gather intel.

Navy SEALs these guys are pretty much considered the baddest of the bad and are specialists in damn near anything you can think of. The Bud/s school is considered the toughest military school out there.

UDT these guys blow **** up(underwater)

SDV Operators (SEALs that drive the underwater SEAL delivery vehicle and get there counterparts in and out of waterborne insertion areas.

SWCC Boat Operator- These guys also deliver SEALs, but are not SEALs themselves. They use a SWCC boat which can be heavily armed with all sorts of fun stuff that goes boom.

Devgru/SEAL Team Six/Dick Marcinkos' gang. These are the best of the best of the SEALs each handpicked and assigned to the most elite Tier 1 team that is publicly known of. These guys are experts in everything they know how to steal cars hotwire boats blow up anything get in anywhere kill whoever needs killing and getting out unseen. These are the guys that took down OBL and the rest of the world shoulda never known it was them until Obammy blabbed his mouth.

Air Force I will start with the most well known and work down to lesser known.
Pararescue- these guys use helos to evacuate casualties in hot zones they are basically paramedics who are also highly skilled combat operators.

TACP Tactical Air Controller(Black Beret)- usually attached to special forces elements from all branches they are the ones who will expertly use the radio to call down the rain while using the other arm to blaze away at Monsiour Hajji.

CAC Combat Air Controllers-(Maroon beret) These guys are certified FAA Air Traffic Controllers. They will sit all by themselves controlling all air assets while a fight is going on and can do so while shooting back.

SERE Specialists- (Sage Green Beret) These guys and gals are the ones who train our pilots and aircrews how to survive behind enemy lines or in hostile environments. They run schools in Washington State and in the gulf of Mexico and probably more I dont know about. Think about how miserable the crews doing this training get and just remember the SERE guys are out there as long as the trainees in the same conditions and then go home for 3-4 days off and the rinse and repeat.

SOWT Special Operations Weather(Grey Beret)- These guys jump in with the teams and are expert- weathermen who gather data to help any attacks succeed.

I am sure I am forgetting someone but there are a lot of types of Special Forces in our military.
