If you want a brown egg, go with a Rhode Island Red. She'll also produce a large to jumbo egg. That's now my choice for replacements when that time comes. Also look at the chart. I find it has just about all the information you can handle. Henderson's Chicken Breed Chart

Backyard chic is to raising chickens as FTF is to gun owners/enthusiasts.

Estes hatachery is in Springfield,MO which isn't too far from you.

This definitely belongs in the survival and sustenance forum!!!!!!!!!! 6 chickens might be the difference between starvation and death, of course you will not eat another egg after living on them all winter.

I used to have a bunch of chickens.We had laying hens,meat chickens,and several exotic breeds from Japan,China,and South America.
The ones from S.America laid different colored eggs,I can't remember the name of them,but they are called Easter egg chickens.

One thing that nobody has mentioned is that chickens attract snakes,poisonous & non-poisonous varieties.So,look before you reach into a nest for the eggs,or you might get the sh!t scared out of you!

I got mine as pullets, doing away from that long 5 month wait. I had just a month and I was getting eggs. I supposed I did miss out on watching the cute little chicks grow up though.
