It doesn't take a lot of space. I started with a chicken tractor. Which isn't much more than a medium size dog house with a small run on it. Problem is, once you have good eggs you want more so I "graduated". Now I have a tractor for sale.

I live in a neighborhood. Not a great place for chickens, from a noise pollution point of view. Gotta get some space, and then build a coop.

That was what I meant by "noise pollution". Before we moved, we were about 1/4 mile from someone in our neighborhood who had at least one rooster. It was REALLY loud. I don't want my neighbors showing up with pitchforks and torches.

This is where I got mine. Lots of filters to find what you want. I was looking strictly for chickens that lay brown or other colors of eggs, so that's how I narrowed my selection down.

IDEAL POULTRY - Chickens, Ducks, Geese, Guineas, Bantams, Chicks, Turkeys, Poultry, Birds, Fowl

I narrowed my choices down using the internet but I ended up getting what ever I could get at our local farmers market. If you don't have that where you're at, I'd go with what lonyaeger suggests. But I'd try to find some locally because you pretty much know they will live in your climate. That said, chickens are darn hardy for the most part to begin with. Have fun hunt.
