Default And some Chickens..........

Congrats on your project. They are simple to raise but can be a pain in the ass at the same time. Make sure that you throw all of your table scraps in the pen, and also plenty of crushed oyster or clam shells. To make the yoke even more orange in color throw in crab peelings. This also will help harden the egg shells. When they start laying and you find some eggs that have been eaten in the nest that is when the fun starts. you have to sit or put a camera in the coop to ketch the culprit. I had another hen that was eating the eggs. We had her for sunday dinner..... Chickens are nothing more than domesticated buzzards. And for a little fun is to bring the kids when you kill and eat the one that is no longer laying. Ever seen a chicken run with her head cut off.....

Like I said, my coop is metal with a small enclosed yard.

Yes. That is some kind of funny. Bloody but funny. But you do what you got to do to be able to eat them. Ours are just now starting to lay so it will be awhile before we get that job.

You want funny, get some guineafowl; they are nutty & very active little yard guards. My sisters chickens are half pet/half livestock; she gets a kick out of them. She has a variety including some guineas and some of the banty/midget chickens. I think she has a couple of turkeys too. The eggs are tasty. Her coop is basically a chain-link fence dog run with a roof inside a fenced in yard area. She has had some hawk problems & some trouble with possums.

What is old in chicken years...10 or 12 years...If you eat a bird that old, that would be one old hard bird..just like a old 14 point buck or deer....

An old hen or rooster needs a long cooking time, either stewed or in a gumbo with smoke sausage. As for how long they live, you'll have to google that. We never let our chickens die of old age.

No, not that long at all. At 5 years old you got a tough old bird. About 2 1/2 years is time for the roaster because they stop producing eggs like they do in the first year. At least that's what I've been told. I'm new at this too.

For all of you that laughed- did you notice both of those coops have two doors?

For us, security at night from racoons and weasels was critical. A weasel can make it through chain link- and will kill every chicken in the coop.

I wish we had some space for chickens.

One door for you, one for the egg machine. Chicken coupe, with all the options.
