Eerie and sad. The Russian Federation has opened some of the formerly restricted areas to tours but you still can't go into the reactor facility area. The radiation levels are 18,000 times above what the human body can tolerate.

Looks pretty much like the rest of the Ukraine. Everything needs a new coat of paint and the roads need new pavement. :(

Hauntingly beautiful, incredibly sad

The vehicles look stripped of sellable parts - wonder if those radioactive headlights and doors are still motoring along in Russia......?

At least they don't have to worry about leaving their headlights on and draining the battery.

Make sure you've had all the kids you want before you plan your trip.

Eerie and sad indeed.
Very interesting though.

GHOST TOWN - KiddofSpeed - Chernobyl Pictures - Kidofspeed - Elena

Pictures are little older, but still interesting.

Crazy. The artists who designed the sets in the videogame Call of Duty Modern Warfare used pics from Pripyat (the town nearest the nuclear plant) and they included the ferris wheel and public swimming pool. In the game, you have go through that town to complete a mission. My youngest boy was amazed to learn that it really existed and the circumstances that led to it's abandonment and neglect. I'll show him these pics after school today. Thanks AFG.

The Kidd of Speed site is much better IMHO. Shes' made numerous trips into the area and writes about it.

She also has another site about the German invasion of Russian During WWII. It's about the defense of Kiev. Kiev - Ukraine - History of Ukraine - Serpent's Wall
Also a very interesting read.
