Yes I believe "the wooden head" was previously present before the hornets took up real estate and built their nest around it. (Only my best guess not my photo)

I have seen many wild hornet nests made by different species of hornets. All the hornet nests had the same basic shape, none of them were human shaped. That is photoshop.
